"And I, brethren when I came to you, came not with excellency of speech or of wisdom, declaring unto you the testimony of God."
I Corinthians 2:1
I had a recipe the other day which called for canned, diced tomatoes. Now, I have a pantry full of food, but no plain canned, diced tomatoes. I had stewed tomatoes with onion and bell pepper. I had tomatoes seasoned with oregano and basil - good for spaghetti sauce. But I didn't have what I needed. Everything was too fancy.
Many times, preachers have trouble with the concept of the plain and simple gospel. They work so hard at giving us "fancy" sermons...sermons that follow a three-point outline, or sermons that use high and lofty terms which often go over the heads of most of us. Just like fancy canned tomatoes, these sermons have their time and place. But most of the time we just need the down-to-earth application of the Word of God which tells us how much we are loved, faults and all.
My devotion for today: Jesus loves me, what more do I need to know?
